Megapro MSQ-Buntar S 75mm – Unweighted Boat Egi
The Megapro MSQ-Buntar S 75mm is a compact, unweighted boat egi designed for finesse vertical squid fishing from a drifting or anchored vessel. The “Buntar” (meaning “round” in Malay) body profile creates a wider, more buoyant flutter on the drop compared to slim-profile boat egis — producing a slower, more seductive fall that gives squid extra time to commit. With no keel weight, it suspends and drifts freely at any depth, making it ideal for working the mid-column over structure, reefs, and sandy bottoms where cuttlefish and squid patrol.
Key Features
- Length: 75mm (S / Small size) – compact profile ideal for medium squid and cuttlefish in 3–15m depth
- Design: Unweighted / No keel weight – purpose-built for boat fishing, vertical presentations, and drift fishing
- Body Profile: Rounded “Buntar” body – wider flutter and slower, more natural sink than slim-profile boat egis
- Hook System: Double-row prawn-style pin hooks – corrosion-resistant for saltwater use
- Available Colors: Green, Blue, White, Pink, Brown – 5 natural tones covering all water clarity and light conditions
Why Unweighted for Boat Fishing?
- Depth control: Use your line weight and current to place the jig at any depth – not dictated by a fixed keel weight
- Natural flutter: The rounded Buntar body drifts and flutters freely, mimicking a dying shrimp or small cuttlefish with no ballast bias
- Vertical jigging: Drop straight down over structure or marked squid schools and work the jig vertically with short lifts and long pauses
Color Selection Guide
- Green: Excels in clear water under natural or artificial light – mimics bioluminescent prey; effective near dock lights and over seagrass beds
- Blue: Natural silhouette in clear, well-lit water – blends with the water column while remaining visible to squid from below
- White: Versatile neutral – highly visible from below in bright conditions; mimics small baitfish and shrimp; effective across all depths
- Pink: The all-rounder – high contrast in low light; excellent at dawn, dusk, and overcast conditions from the boat
- Brown: The bottom specialist – mimics crabs, shrimp, and bottom-dwelling prey; particularly effective for cuttlefish over sandy or rocky substrates and when fishing close to the seabed
How to Fish It from a Boat (Expert Technique)
- Vertical jigging: Drop the MSQ-Buntar to the desired depth over marked squid or structure, then execute short 20–40cm upward lifts followed by long 5–15 second pauses – most takes occur on the pause
- Drift fishing: Allow the jig to drift naturally with the current at depth – minimal rod input; the rounded Buntar body creates a wide, enticing flutter as it drifts
- Bottom bouncing: For cuttlefish, let the jig touch bottom briefly then lift 30–50cm and pause – the Brown color excels in this technique over sandy or mixed substrates
- Watch for line twitch, sudden slack, or a subtle weight increase – strike immediately with a firm sideways sweep
Pro Tips
- Use PE 1.5–2.5 braid with a 2–3m fluorocarbon leader (1.0–1.2mm) – heavier leader handles reef abrasion
- Add a small inline sinker above the leader if you need to get down faster in strong current – the unweighted design gives you full flexibility
- The Brown variant is a standout choice for cuttlefish – always carry one when fishing over sandy or rocky bottom
- Pair the MSQ-Buntar S with the MSQ-Tiger 80mm on a second rod to cover different color profiles and depths simultaneously
